Why A2L Refrigerant?
The goal to reduce global warming will require a global approach, and many calls to action are being implemented or are already in effect around the world. For example, in support of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Climate Agreement, an area of focus is on the reduction of potent greenhouse gas emissions, such as the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants, in the atmosphere. This mandate is prevalent around the globe, where measures are curtailing the use of these products.
The air conditioning and refrigeration industry has been actively working since 2006 to develop a new classification of refrigerants, known as A2L, to meet the lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) challenge. While having slightly higher flammability characteristics as compared to traditional A1 refrigerants, A2Ls are much harder to ignite and are much less flammable than A3 hydrocarbon refrigerants.
A new standard was created for certain components, for example, arcing/sparking electrical components used in A2L flammable refrigerant systems. These components can have a higher risk of igniting the refrigerant. According to UL 60335-2-40, it provides the testing to certify that these components comply with the Flame Arrest-Protected component standard in ignition and explosion-proof systems.
The Current Updates According to UL Solutions:
UL 60335-2-40 3rd Edition is an ANSI/SCC-approved standard covering electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Further, it is a binational standard (U.S. and Canada) that is based on the international IEC 60335-2-40 standard.
IEC 60335-2-40 is currently being used as the basis for the design, evaluation, testing, and certification of HVAC equipment using low-GWP refrigerants in places like Europe. Overall, UL 60335-2-40 has adopted more conservative safety requirements than the IEC standard to address the unique product usage of the North American market.
