Comau's Role In EU's CONVERGING Project

Comau is contributing to the European Union’s CONVERGING project, which aims to advance smart and reconfigurable production systems to meet the challenges of modern manufacturing. By integrating collaborative robots, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), artificial intelligence and human operators, CONVERGING seeks to create human-centric production systems that can perceive, reason, adapt, collaborate and innovate. As part of the multi-faceted project, Comau has spearheaded two cutting-edge, collaborative robotic solutions, each designed to address a distinct industry challenge. Comau-led deliverable concerns During the second project review held on November 5 at the Teaching Factory Competence Center premises in Patras (Greece), organized by the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS) of the University of Patras (Greece), Comau introduced its prototypes, developed at the company’s headquarters in Turin, for testing ahead to the project partners as well as a delegation from the European Commission consisting of the project officer and two reviewers. The first Comau-led deliverable concerns the design and engineering of a medium-payload MyCo collaborative robot (cobot) used for collaborative post-processing of additive-manufactured parts, combining human-safe operation with the precision and adaptability required in advanced manufacturing environments. Remote inspection robot The second pilot focused on the aerospace sector, where Comau developed a collaborative remote inspection robot for non-invasive aircraft wing inspection – a task that has traditionally been performed manually. Developed within the Aeronautics Open Pilot Line of the CONVERGING project, the innovative solution, powered by the 6-axis MyCo medium-payload cobot, integrates advanced kinematics, precision mechanics, and remote-control capabilities to support additive manufacturing and maintenance operations. In doing so, it enhances inspection accuracy and safety, reduces maintenance time, and optimizes the aircraft maintenance lifecycle. Deployment of innovative technologies “The CONVERGING project reflects a strategic effort to enable next-generation manufacturing by promoting reconfigurability, efficiency, and human-centric automation,” explains Nicole Clement, Chief Advanced Automation Solutions Officer at Comau. “By leveraging our extensive expertise in robotics and industrial automation together with our new cobots and AMRs, Comau aims to contribute to the development and deployment of innovative technologies that will redefine the future of manufacturing and maintenance processes.”

Comau's Hyperflex Automates Solar Energy Transition

Comau’s Head of Advanced Robotics, Giovanni Di Stefano, joined António Coutinho, CEO of EDP Innovation, for a Masterclass at Web Summit 2025, the world’s major technology conference that is currently taking place in Lisbon from November 10–13. The session, titled Automating the Energy Transition: The Future is Now, was held on November 11 at 2:00 p.m. (Lisbon time) and explored how advanced automation and collaborative innovation are accelerating the global shift toward sustainable solar energy production. The discussion highlighted details and outcomes of Hyperflex, Comau’s breakthrough mobile robotic factory that automates the assembly and installation of solar trackers directly in the field. Streamlining solar farm construction Developed in close collaboration with EDP, Hyperflex streamlines solar farm construction, cuts installation times and costs, while improving worker safety and energy efficiency. It has already been successfully used to construct a 3MW section within EDP's 122MW solar park in Peñaflor, Valladolid, Spain. During the Masterclass, Giovanni Di Stefano offered an exclusive deep dive into the engineering collaboration behind Hyperflex 2.0, revealing how the companies have leveraged the Peñaflor project to identify key development enhancements and further increase the system’s total value proposition. The next-generation system aims to reduce costs and double – or even triple – current performance metrics through enhanced automation, mobility, and AI-driven control. Progress in renewable energy and innovation Now in its ninth consecutive year at the Summit, EDP is also hosting a keynote at the Energy Stage, underlining its ongoing progress in renewable energy and innovation. “The close collaboration with the EDP team continues to be key to the project’s success, and I would like to thank António Coutinho and his team both for backing this innovative initiative and for helping us refine and improve the solution,” said Giovanni Di Stefano, Head of Advanced Robotics. “Hyperflex represents one of the most advanced technology solutions in the solar construction market, with a leading Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and fully validated for large-scale industrial deployment. Now, having identified process improvements including automated quick clamping options – we expect to double or even triple performance with Hyperflex 2.0.”
