Ameren Missouri is running a full year ahead of schedule to install smart electric meters across its service territory. Since the project began in July 2020, customers living in the City of St. Louis, St. Charles County, and most of St. Louis County have already received upgraded smart meters.

These smart meters replace 20-year-old technology and give customers more convenience, choice, and control over their home energy use,” said Jeff Esserman, director of the smart meter program at Ameren Missouri. “We’re pacing to complete the full project in just four years instead of five to give more customers access to the benefits of this technology sooner.”

smoother, faster experience

Thanks to the two-way communication capabilities of the new meters, Ameren Missouri has expedited the move-in and move-out process for customers.

The new, smart meters identify outages even faster, which helps Ameren Missouri speed up the restoration process

The meter's remote capabilities mean customers have a smoother, faster experience because no service person is sent to the property. The new, smart meters identify outages even faster, which helps Ameren Missouri speed up the restoration process. “This technology gives us better operational insight into what is occurring with power at your home or business,” said Esserman. “The ability to more quickly identify problems and fix them has been a huge advantage.”

Smart meter installation

Customers with a smart meter have timely access to energy usage data to help them make decisions, such as selecting from new rate options that can lower bills by shifting energy use to lower-cost periods. More information about the smart meter installation and time of use rate options is available on the website.

The remainder of St. Louis County will have smart meters in place by the end of the year. Smart meter installation for all of Ameren Missouri’s customers should be complete by 2024. The smart meter rollout is part of Ameren Missouri’s larger Smart Energy Plan, which was first launched in 2019 and aims to create cleaner and more reliable energy for its 1.2 million electric customers statewide.
