Electrical contractor - Canyon State Electric (CSE), based in Phoenix, has been chosen as the 2023 subcontractor of the year by the American Subcontractors Association of Arizona (ASA). This distinction was awarded during the ASA’s “Renewing the Future” awards gala held last week.
“It means the world to Canyon State Electric to be given this award,” stated Robert Hughes, President of CSE, adding “One of our core values is innovation. We aim to be a driving force for our industry, and this shows we’re on the right track.”
The selection was made by a committee comprising ASA board members and a general contractor partner.
Recognizing Excellence in Safety

Josh Umar, ASA’s Executive Director, highlighted the company's contributions, noting, "Canyon State Electric is one of the largest women-owned businesses in Phoenix and has been doing top-quality work for more than four decades."
He mentioned CSE's involvement in ASA's member partner program with the Arizona Department of Occupational Safety & Health (ADOSH) and praised their leadership's role on ASA's board and committees.
Pioneering in Training and Mental Health
Further distinctions for CSE include the enhancement of their University of Canyon State Electric training program and trailblazing efforts in focusing on employee mental health and wellness.
Umar remarked on these innovations, emphasizing their importance to the industry.
Voluntary Protection Program and Mental Health Awareness
Sidney Hawkins, who manages safety and training at CSE, oversees the partnership with ADOSH to achieve Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) status and introduced mental health awareness into CSE’s standard training last year.
“Mental health is a key element of the safety culture at CSE. For us, it’s just as important as physical health,” Hawkins commented. The Excellence in Safety award, he noted, underscores their commitment to comprehensive safety.
Hughes added, “The ASA of Arizona is constantly looking out for each subcontractor through advocacy, safety, workforce development, and continuing education. We look forward to our involvement with ASA for years to come.”
