At a recent meeting held at the headquarters of the International Energy Agency (IEA), key representatives from the heat pump sector, including manufacturers, industry associations, public sector officials, and academics, convened to deliberate on enhancing data quality to bolster policy support. With over 150 delegates participating, the focus was on how improved access to detailed data concerning heat pump installation and performance could inform policies that promote increased adoption among consumers.
Collaborative Efforts for Data Alignment
The attendees underscored the challenges posed by the limited and inconsistent availability of technical, economic, and performance data for heat pumps across various markets and regions. This inconsistency complicates the process of comparing progress across countries and hinders the identification of areas needing further research and innovation. During a closed session in the afternoon, the workshop continued to explore themes of organizational collaboration on data harmonization and alignment.
Establishing Consistent Data-Reporting Frameworks
While the IEA is at the forefront of developing heat pump data-reporting, ongoing efforts are essential to enhance regional best practices. International cooperation is needed to establish universally agreed definitions that will underpin consistent data-reporting taxonomies and techniques. The push for harmonizing data collection and reporting on heat pumps is set to progress through the Heat Pump Coordination Group, established in 2024 under the aegis of five IEA Technology Collaboration Programs, operating within the broader scope of the IEA's Committee on Energy Research and Technology.
