MKS Inc. has introduced the Ophir® SupIR-X 15-300mm f/4 Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) Continuous Zoom Lens at the ADEX Seoul event.

This advanced optical solution is specifically tailored for 10 μm SXGA (1280 x 1024 pixels) detectors and is designed to enhance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions on air, land, and sea, offering improved clarity, precision, and operational range.

Enhanced MWIR Image Quality

The SupIR-X 15-300mm f/4 lens, stemming from a robust lineage and crafted for contemporary ISR requirements, leverages the thermal imaging potential of 10 μm SXGA detectors. Key attributes include high-performance MWIR imagery with minimal distortion, stability in line-of-sight (LOS), and consistent boresight retention.

The lens integrates with the Ophir extender ecosystem, reaching up to 1200 mm focal length, extending the detection range beyond 26 km for vehicle targets without altering its f/4 aperture. Additionally, it features a mechanical shutter that maintains image quality in fast-changing conditions.

Overcoming ISR Mission Challenges

Dr. Kobi Lasri, General Manager of Ophir Optics, stated that "Optical precision and reach have long been a challenge for ISR missions. The SupIR-X 15-300mm f/4 lens represents a generational leap in MWIR zoom technology."

Designed specifically for SXGA 10 μm detectors, it integrates with Ophir's long-range extender suite to enhance ISR electro-optics with required clarity, resolution, and range for modern missions.

Technical Specifications

The lens also includes an integrated shutter for mechanical NUC, and its extended BFL simplifies system integration

Optimized for 10 μm SXGA MWIR detectors in the spectral bands of 3.6-4.2 μm and 3.6-4.9 μm, the SupIR-X lens offers a horizontal field of view (FOV) ranging from 45° (wide) to 2.4° (narrow), maintaining high spatial resolution and low distortion throughout the image. It achieves a high transmission rate of 92% and features a high-speed motorized focus (less than 1 second) and fast zooming (up to 8 seconds).

The lens also includes an integrated shutter for mechanical non-uniformity correction (NUC), and its extended back focal length (BFL) simplifies system integration.

Compatible with 19.4 mm and 20.5 mm cold shield height detectors, the lens supports a variety of pioneering MWIR sensors. Compact and sturdy, it measures Ø93.4×132 mm, weighs about 1 kg, and operates between –32 °C to +80 °C with IP67 front element sealing.

Focal Length Versatility and Configurations

The Ophir optical extender ecosystem compatibility allows the new lens's focal length to expand from 30 mm up to 1200 mm.

Configuration options include 30-600 mm, 35-690 mm, 45-900 mm, and 60-1200 mm, which facilitates vehicle detection over distances exceeding 26 km under standard operating conditions.

Durable and Mission-Ready

Offered in configurations with durable and hard carbon coatings, the SupIR-X lens is built to withstand extreme conditions.

It includes features such as motorized focus and zoom, rapid response times, and robust mechanics, making it suitable for border and homeland security, long-range ISR, counter-UAS operations, critical infrastructure protection, coastal and maritime surveillance, law enforcement, and civil defense missions.
