In the wake of severe weather conditions that lashed the ArkLaTex region, SWEPCO teams are actively assessing and responding to storm damage. The powerful storms, which occurred recently, brought with them strong winds, hail, and significant flooding, leading to a challenging restoration scenario for the energy provider.
As of 10 a.m. on Thursday, roughly 10,000 customers in northwest Louisiana were left without electricity. Earlier, as the storms were at their most intense, approximately 16,800 homes and businesses experienced power outages.
Challenges of Flood-Induced Power Outages
The flooding experienced in the region presents a distinctive set of challenges for restoration work. Floodwaters complicate repair processes and could potentially prolong the time needed to fully restore power services.
Damage Assessment and Recovery Efforts
Damage assessors from SWEPCO have documented instances of downed power lines and uprooted trees throughout the affected areas. Crews are on site, aiming to restore electricity as safely and efficiently as possible. Detailed timelines for restoration will become clearer once thorough damage assessments are conducted.
Important Post-Storm Safety Advice
Residents are advised to maintain a safe distance from downed power lines and any objects they may be in contact with. In case of encountering any hazards, individuals should promptly contact 911 or report the situation to SWEPCO at (888) 218-3919. Caution is urged while clearing debris, as tree limbs or other materials could obscure live wires. Any debris within a 10-foot radius of power lines should not be handled. For those using generators, it is crucial to adhere closely to the manufacturer's guidelines.
