The American Electric Power Foundation (AEP Foundation) awarded a $50,000 grant to Community Renewal International (CRI), following the recommendation of Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO).
This funding is set to bolster the efforts of eleven Community Renewal Friendship Houses and their programs throughout the communities of Shreveport and Bossier.

Community Renewal International, a faith-based non-profit, focuses on creating safe and caring environments by connecting residents and neighbors. The Community Renewal Friendship House is central to this mission, acting as a center for community activities and support services.

Offerings include after-school education, character development, service projects, GED courses, tutoring, computer training, and art and music lessons, as well as family-oriented events. These initiatives are designed to empower local residents and enhance community connections.
“We are excited about our continued partnership with SWEPCO,” remarked Jimmy Graves, CRI Director of Development. “The funding will enable us to further our mission of nurturing positive relationships within the communities and sustaining valuable programs at our Friendship Houses.”
Enduring Partnerships Yielding Results
Since 1994, Community Renewal International has played a pivotal role in the transformation of the Shreveport/Bossier area, thanks to contributions from local citizens and businesses.
Through the establishment of eleven Friendship Houses, major crimes in these neighborhoods have dropped by 55%. Michael Corbin, SWEPCO's External Affairs manager in Shreveport, commented, "We are proud to continue our long partnership with Community Renewal International in their efforts to build resilient and thriving communities. This grant will build upon previous support to sustain the impactful work being done at the Friendship Houses, ultimately leading to safer and more vibrant neighborhoods."
National Recognition
CRI's successful community-building model has garnered interest nationwide, with delegations from over 200 municipalities visiting Shreveport to learn from their initiatives.
The opening of a new Friendship House in September 2023 further highlights the organization's dedicated efforts in neighborhood revitalization and promoting positive community changes.
