Reliable energy from the Callaway Energy Center near Fulton, Missouri, USA, is once again supporting communities across the state, after a scheduled refueling outage. The energy center’s 26th planned refueling and maintenance outage was completed last week.
“Callaway, and the reliable, carbon-free energy we generate every day, is absolutely vital and foundational to reliably serving our customers’ energy needs for decades to come,” said Warren Witt, Plant Manager at Callaway Energy Center, adding “We take great pride in the safe, precise execution of our recent outage and everyday operations here at Callaway.”

The main task of each refueling outage is to load new fuel for the reactor. Approximately one-third of Callaway's fuel assemblies were replaced during the outage at the 1,194-megawatt nuclear facility. Crews also used this time to perform additional upgrades and tests on nuclear and non-nuclear sides of the energy center.
“We took the time needed and worked as a team to ensure the reactor core and equipment can perform as designed until the next refueling outage in the spring of 2025,” said Warren Witt.

Warren Witt adds, “We’re proud of our accomplishments, but also know we must perform at a high level each day as Callaway is key to Ameren Missouri’s plan to reliably meet customer’s energy needs in an environmentally responsible manner.”
Late last month, Ameren Missouri shared its plan to thoughtfully integrate a new, diverse mix of generation sources while maintaining the availability of existing energy centers. The plan reflects the assumption that the operating license for Callaway is extended beyond 2044, ensuring its ability to continue providing carbon-free energy around the clock.
