RECOM's new RPA40-FR series of rugged, board-mount DC/DC converters in a 2“ x 1” x 0.4” (50.8 x 25.4 x 10.2 mm) through-pin package is ideal for railway applications with their input range of 36–160VDC (200V/1 second).

Nominal input voltages of 72V, 96V, and 110V are covered with tolerances, dips, and surges while the output selection is 5V, 5.1V, 12V, 15V, 24V, ±12V, or ±15V, with the single outputs trimmable by ±10% minimum (15 and 24V models are trimmable to +20/−10%).

Advanced thermal design

Advanced thermal design allows the operation to an ambient of 105°C with load derating and/or airflow

Efficiency for the series peaks at 90%, so that full load output is possible to high ambient temperatures with natural convection cooling only, while advanced thermal design further allows the operation to an ambient of 105°C with load derating and/or airflow.

No minimum load is required, and comprehensive protection is provided against over-temperature, input under-voltage, output over-current, and short circuits. A control pin is also provided.

General industrial applications

The products hold safety certifications to UL/EN/IEC 62368-1, EN 45545-2, and EN 50155, with an isolation rating of 3kVAC/1 min (reinforced). EN 55032 class A EMC specification is met without external components while class B can be met with the addition of a simple filter.

MTBF for the parts is 1.25MHrs according to MIL-HDBK 217-F (GB/25°C) and the robust, conservative design, along with encapsulation, makes the RPA40-FR series perfect for the harsh railway environment. The parts are also ideal for general industrial applications where surge voltages and high temperatures might be encountered.
