As the electric vehicle (EV) revolution gathers momentum, there is an urgent need for the installed charging infrastructure to be smarter.

Electric Miles and Project EV have agreed on a deal which will address this growing problem, while saving drivers money and helping the Government’s ambition to make every chargepoint smart.

The two companies have signed a 3-year contract with plans for around 100,000 chargers deployed by Project EV to be exclusively controlled on the Electric Miles Smart Charging platform.

As a result, thousands of EV owners will have access to a suite of services, including automated charging at the cheapest time, saving drivers money and protecting the transmission and distribution grid from excessive demand at peak periods. With smart charging, motorists can save 40% on their charging bills.

Essential steps on the road to Net-Zero

Through the Electric Miles app, drivers will have full control over the charging of their car to ensure it has the right amount of charge for the driver’s needs at the lowest possible cost. At the touch of their smartphone screen, they’ll be able to see the level of charge in their car’s battery to make charging more intelligent and automated. 

Innovations like this agreement between Electric Miles and Project EV are essential steps on the road to Net-Zero. The government has announced there will be a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, as a result, hundreds of thousands of EV chargers will have to be in place.

The government has made it clear that these chargers will need to be smart to reduce the impact on the National Grid. It won’t be possible for all EVs to be charging at the same time, without a massive investment in transmission infrastructure and power stations. 

Electric Miles is already addressing this problem by clubbing its intelligent smart charging platform with its innovative demand-side flexibility services, where it balances EV charging with grid constraints. 

Through deals with three major Distribution System Operators (DSO), it will offer about 23 MWs of Demand Side Response (DSR). In the future, benefits from providing this service will be shared with the drivers who have allowed their car batteries to be used in this way. Yet another incentive to join the EV revolution.

Demand for electricity

Arun Anand, CEO and Founder of Electric Miles, commented, "Most domestic car charging is still done after returning from work between 5 pm and 7 pm, the same time as demand for electricity goes up as everyone starts cooking their dinner. Project EV has already deployed 20,000 chargers in the residential market."

Our Smart Charging platform puts motorists in total control of how and when they charge while also helping the Grid to deliver power efficiently.”

Smart Charging Regulation

Arun Anand continues, “From the start, we developed our software as a service platform to be hardware agnostic. It can work with any Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) charger in the market. This is an important consideration for any charger manufacturer that doesn’t have this capability with the government’s Smart Charging Regulation due to come into effect next year.”
