Comau is taking a significant role in the European Union's CONVERGING project, aimed at enhancing modern manufacturing with smart and adaptable production systems.
This joint initiative integrates collaborative robots, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), artificial intelligence, and human operators, all working together to develop human-centric production systems capable of perceiving, reasoning, adapting, collaborating, and innovating.
Comau's Collaborative Robotic Solutions
Within the multifaceted CONVERGING project, Comau has pioneered two collaborative robotic solutions, each addressing specific industry challenges.
Comau has pioneered two collaborative robotic solutions, each addressing specific industry challenges
During the second project review on November 5 at the Teaching Factory Competence Center in Patras, Greece, organized by the University of Patras's Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation (LMS), Comau presented its prototypes.
These were developed in Turin and demonstrated to project partners and a European Commission delegation, including the project officer and two reviewers.
Medium-Payload MyCo Cobot
The first solution introduced by Comau involves the design and engineering of a medium-payload MyCo collaborative robot (cobot) for the collaborative post-processing of additive-manufactured parts.
This cobot combines human-safe operation with the precision and adaptability needed in advanced manufacturing settings.
Innovative Aerospace Inspection Robot
Comau’s development of a joint remote inspection robot for non-invasive aircraft wing inspections
Focusing on the aerospace sector, the second pioneer pilot project includes Comau’s development of a collaborative remote inspection robot for non-invasive aircraft wing inspections—an activity traditionally conducted manually. Created within the Aeronautics Open Pilot Line of the CONVERGING project, this solution uses the 6-axis MyCo medium-payload cobot.
It offers enhanced inspection accuracy and safety, while reducing maintenance time and optimizing the maintenance lifecycle of aircraft by incorporating advanced kinematics, precision mechanics, and remote-control capabilities.
Strategic Deployment of Advanced Technologies
Nicole Clement, Chief Advanced Automation Solutions Officer at Comau, explains, "The CONVERGING project reflects a strategic effort to enable next-generation manufacturing by promoting reconfigurability, efficiency, and human-centric automation."
She adds that by utilizing Comau's extensive robotics and industrial automation expertise, and developing new cobots and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), the company aims to contribute to redefining future manufacturing and maintenance processes through innovative technologies.
